Designing for street vendors
The course intended to complete a design and material experiment exercise at a chosen context and site, as the studio progresses. This course looked at value chain dynamics of different vendors (street or otherwise) and studied the town vending act and connected with the stakeholders via interviews with the municipality, traffic police and customers of various backgrounds. This eventually became a design process where concepts were presented to the local town vending committee to mobilize ideas into a more concrete proposal . The whole process was a part of a Design mela and an exhibition which was presented to the city of Bhuj.
About the site
The Ekta Chowkdi vending zone, situated alongside the Airport ring road, has organically evolved into a hub for various groups over the past two decades. The primary customers during the day are the college kids and office people for snacks and refreshments and during the night vends to smaller groups and families. Adjacent to a residential colony, it boasts a diverse array of vendors offering various items.
Originally made as informal otlas around tree canopies by the vendors , the site gained significance as a public seating. However, the lack of lighting and sanitation deterred families from using it. .
The need for improvement led to a plan involving the reorganization of vendors onto nearby open land. With the collaboration of local authorities and vendors, the vision was to create an interactive public space with clustered seating arrangements, ensuring permeability and semi private zones encircling trees.
This transformed public space aims to attract both residents and visitors, stimulating the vending zone's growth and prosperity
